Herbold EWS / DWS — Single- & Double-Shaft Shredders

Herbold single-shaft (EWS) and double-shaft (DWS) shredders handle the first, coarse size-reduction step of the recycling chain — reducing used, mixed and contaminated plastics to a size that downstream granulators and washing lines can process. The EWS is a further development of the standard HR series for high throughputs and difficult tasks, in dry or wet operation.

Key features

Why the EWS / DWS

Countershaft drive, no gearbox

The EWS drives through a countershaft without a fault-prone gearbox, giving optimum protection against damage from foreign bodies; high-inertia pulleys absorb shock loads efficiently.

Variable knife configuration

A rotor roller with easily replaceable knife cassettes and adjustable stator knives, with optional wear-proof rotor and stator executions and a water-cooled rotor.

Externally mounted bearings

Oversized spherical roller bearings sit in external steel pillow blocks, completely separated from the grinding chamber — ideal for wet operation.

Fast maintenance

Hydraulically swivelling / hingeable screen cage and replaceable grinding chamber allow rapid screen changes and knife exchange; PLC control with programmable feed.

DWS 45/160 double-shaft

A large rotor working surface gives excellent ingestion performance for materials that traditional shredders could only feed in batches — big-bags and large voluminous containers. Screen selection sets a uniform, constant granular size, so unlike conventional two-shaft shredders without a screen no long stripes arise; suitable for dry or wet operation.

DWS construction detail

Open-design hopper for direct or conveyor feeding in stable ribbed welded steel; identical screwed cutting blocks usable on both sides, mounted in exchangeable cassettes that positively insert into the rotor or a stator knife support; rotor prepared for cooling-water circulation with optional anti-wear plating; four exchangeable screen baskets per side with manual tilt-down and big inspection doors.

EWS-R pipe shredder

For pipes up to 1,000 mm diameter and 12,000 mm long, plus start-up lumps: material is placed in a tiltable storage trough, the supply hopper tips it in, and a hydraulic stamp pushes it onto the rotor under automatic load control — producing free-flowing chips, not thin strips, so re-granulation is usually unnecessary.
