A shredder is the first machine in most size-reduction lines. It takes material that is too large, too thick or too awkward to feed anything else — purge lumps, rejected mouldings, pipe, sheet, bales, drums, film rolls — and reduces it to a coarse, conveyable fraction. What comes out is not yet regranulate; it is material a granulator, washing line or extruder can actually accept.
Three kinds of plant tend to need one. Recyclers processing post-consumer or post-industrial material, where input arrives baled or mixed and nothing downstream can take it as delivered. Converters generating production waste — start-up lumps, edge trim, rejected parts — who want to put that material back through their own process rather than sell it at scrap value. And processors handling bulky rigid items, where the problem is simply that the part will not fit through a granulator throat.
The distinction that matters most in practice is between shredding and granulating. A shredder runs slowly with high torque and is built to survive contamination and inconsistent input. A granulator runs fast and produces a controlled particle size, but is far less tolerant of what you feed it. Many plants need both, in sequence.

Five questions decide the machine, and we ask all five before quoting.
What is the input, physically? Not the polymer — the form. Bales, lumps, pipe, sheet, film on cores and rejected mouldings all load a rotor differently, and the same material in two forms can point at two different machines.
How contaminated is it? Post-consumer material carries metal, stone and grit. That drives cutter material, screen design and how much protection the machine needs upstream and downstream.
What happens next? A shredder feeding a washing line has a different job from one feeding a granulator or an extruder. The downstream machine sets the output specification, not the shredder.
What output size do you actually need? Coarse output is cheaper to produce and easier on the machine. Asking a shredder for a fine, tightly-controlled particle is usually the wrong tool — that is a granulator's job.
Single-shaft, double-shaft, or a combination? Single-shaft with a hydraulic ram suits bulky, thick-walled parts. Double-shaft handles awkward mixed input at lower speed. A combined shredder-granulator does both jobs in one housing where floor space is short.
One more thing worth knowing: if your input is genuinely oversized — full bales, large pipe sections, complete rolls — the answer may be a pre-cutting stage rather than a bigger shredder. Herbold's HGS guillotine exists for exactly that.
What determines the price
We do not publish prices, because a shredder is not a catalogue item — two plants asking for “a plastic shredder” can be quoted very differently. What we can do is be clear about what moves the number, so you can size a budget before asking.
Rotor design and shaft count set the starting point. A single-shaft machine with a hydraulic ram, a double-shaft machine running slowly on mixed input, and a combined shredder-granulator are three different builds. Rotor diameter and length, cutter geometry and how the knives are held all follow from that choice.
Input material and contamination drive the specification harder than most buyers expect. Clean production scrap is undemanding. Post-consumer material carrying metal, stone and grit calls for tougher cutter material, heavier bearings and protection upstream and downstream — and that is a different machine, not an option on the same one.
Output size and throughput class pull in opposite directions. A finer, more tightly controlled output means a smaller screen and more work per kilogram, so holding throughput while reducing particle size costs more on both counts. Being honest about what the downstream process actually needs is the cheapest decision available.
Ancillary equipment is routinely underestimated: infeed conveyors and hoppers, metal detection and magnets to protect the rotor, extraction, and the granulator or washing line the shredder feeds. A shredder quoted alone is rarely a working installation.
Installation, commissioning and training are real line items — foundations, power, shipping and the engineers who commission the machine and teach your operators to change knives safely. We include them explicitly rather than leaving them to surprise you later.
