Segments are the building block

Tambula's spiked rollers are used for perforating, embossing, transport and fibre opening. Most are built from segments: pinned rings mounted side by side on a shaft or tube until they make up the working width.
That construction is why the two published size ranges differ. An individual segment runs 10 to 400 mm in diameter and 5 to 200 mm long; assembled into a complete roller, the same tooling reaches 20 to 400 mm diameter and up to 5,000 mm in length.
Pins are made to customer requirement in hardened and/or rustproof steel, from 0.3 to 8 mm, at densities up to 100 pins per cm². Only pins of the highest German quality are used.

Design rules from Tambula: segment length should not exceed three times the diameter, and micro-perforation segments with a large diameter are normally 50 mm wide so a damaged segment is cheaper to replace.
How the tooling is put together
Segmented construction
Perforation rollers are normally built from single segments mounted on a shaft or tube. Damaged segments are replaced individually rather than scrapping a whole roller.
Mass inertia control
The tube can be mounted on a steeply mounted shaft to reduce mass inertia — which matters for thin, sensitive material on undriven rollers.
Inner ring
Pins are pressed from inside into pre-bored holes in the supporting ring, then an inner steel or aluminium ring is pressed in. Omit it only where weight matters.
Pin geometry is a trade-off
Slim, pointed pins pierce with less force but are more delicate. High densities need sharply increasing force and displace more material.
Embossing rollers
Ground to final diameter after pinning, with edges deburred and rounded. Any pin diameter can be used provided at least 0.3 mm of material remains between pins.
Long parts
Rollers and long parts are produced up to more than 8 metres on four axial machining centres.
Beyond perforation
The same pinning capability produces transport and process rollers for other industries.
Edge gluing machines
Spiked rollers of around 20 mm diameter transport the edge to be glued safely through wood-processing machines.
Carpet take-off
Solid steel rollers with pins and a friction lining, more than 4 m long, pull carpet out of weaving machines on a single shaft.
'GEVA' system transport rollers
Plastic-covered steel rollers with a friction pad, used in Dornier, Picanol/Meersschaerdt and Itema/Sulzer weaving machines. Pins are set from outside so they can be replaced easily.
Fibre retention rollers
Pinned rollers hold fibres back in opening machines, where high roller speeds and beating loads demand precise, secure pinning.
