Chrome anilox rollers

Zecher Chrome anilox rollers

The chrome anilox roller corresponds to the original design of the anilox roller. A steel or stainless steel blank is electroplated with a copper layer, the cells are engraved into that copper, and a protective chrome plating is then applied electrolytically over the engraving.

Because copper is soft, that chrome layer is what protects the engraving from abrasive doctor-blade wear. Compared with a ceramic roller the surface is much smoother and empties better, which is why Zecher position the chrome roller mainly for coating.

Construction

How a chrome anilox roller is built

Steel or stainless blank

The roller body is a steel or stainless steel blank — the original anilox roller design.

Electroplated copper layer

A copper layer is electroplated onto the blank. This is the layer the cells are actually engraved into.

Diamond engraving

Each cavity is individually struck by a diamond. Zecher note this gives absolute evenness of cavity geometry and an optimum pick-up volume compared with other processes.

Protective chrome plating

A chrome plating is applied electrolytically over the engraving. Because copper is soft, this is what protects the cells from abrasive doctor-blade wear.

Smoother than ceramic

The chrome surface is much smoother than a ceramic one and has better emptying behaviour — which is why Zecher position it mainly for coating.

Reconditioning

Zecher recondition used rollers in-house regardless of who manufactured them, as an alternative to buying new.
